In 1393, the first Christmas market in Frankfurt, Germany, was documented. During this era, Christmas didn't hold the same cultural significance as it does today. The primary purpose of the market was to offer citizens the chance to purchase essential items before the arrival of winter. Unlike fairs, only residents of Frankfurt were allowed to set up stalls.During the Middle Ages, mystery plays were performed at Christmas Markets, with origins possibly tracing back to 941 CE. It was during this period that King Otto I spent Christmas at the Royal Palace of Frankfurt and attended Christmas Mass at the Salvatorkirche. As King Otto exited the church, his estranged brother, Heinrich, knelt before him and begged for forgiveness, which Otto granted. This scene was later immortalized in a painting by Alfred Rethel in 1840, now housed in the Historical Museum.
